What to expect when you see ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting’ - laugh, laugh, boredom, boredom, rinse and re-nope, no repeat.

The film opens with a faux Dancing with the Stars-type of show in which Cameron Diaz’s character is a contestant, who (not-so-spoiler-alert) wins and is thrust further into the spotlight when she discovers her dance partner/boyfriend has gotten her pregnant and that’s going to mess with her career as a tv trainer on a version of The Biggest Loser.

Otherwise set in Atlanta, the rest of the film circles around a, finally, pregnant mom-to-be-guru played by Elizabeth Banks; the “I’m just not ready, until I’m ready” single gal who wakes up preggers after a one-night stand played by Anna Kendrick; The free-spirit on the verge of adoption (Jennifer Lopez) - and a few other famous people cast as other pregnant women, baby-daddies, friends, neighbors and homeless people. Ok, so there are no cameos as homeless people, but you get the idea.

The problem is these fantastic actors and actresses don’t mix. The writing keeps us hopeful that moments of sheer hilarity will continue, and. then. they. don’t. The stories don’t intersect the way they want them to, and when they do it’s without the necessary self-awareness that of COURSE so-and-so knows so-and-so, instead it’s taken far too seriously - and then, ok, to be fair, I cried and cried when (another spoiler alert) the babies were finally born.

TheMovieReview
